Audri and Remi had some really sweet moments. I appreciated that they told everyone about their relationship as soon as it happened. I get annoyed with the 'brother's best friend' trope when they keep it a secret for so long. As cute as these two were, I didn't totally buy into their connection. Part of it was the pacing of their relationship and part of it was an issue of telling us rather than showing us.
The story had promise, but there was a lot happening that I lost interest after awhile because it was too much. The mystery parts were interesting and I think that would've been enough with out all the other pieces. Also, I didn't fully buy into Remi being this brooding guy. Yes, he had to do some things to defend himself, but he was honestly so sweet with everyone he cared about. This is just a personal preference but the use of 'tummy' was making me cringe.
I might read the rest of the series as they come out. I am interested to see if Grayson ends up with one of Audri's best friends.
Thank you to Nadia and Foreword PR & Marketing for the ARC!

He thrives in the dark until she sparks his flame, igniting his new purpose.
Magnetic, brilliant, and achingly stunning, Remington Starke is a dangerous man with a vision, a mission, and a threatening past that haunts him. That alone should keep him away from the only woman who has ever made him feel anything.
Creative, cautious, and canny, Audri Wu is imprisoned by a guilt that torments her soul. Despite the darkness, she sees the rainbow in the rain and the spark that lies beyond the hardened façade of a man who has a reputation for shattering hearts.
Her boss.
Her protector.
Her brother’s best friend.
Water to her fire.
As their romance begins, that past catches fire and burns away the lies, revealing deadly secrets that could destroy them both.
The Mastermind is a brother's best friend, billionaire boss, and a suspenseful contemporary romance. It is Book One in the WaterFyre Rising series but can be read as a standalone.
