This review has been a struggle for me to start because I debated if I even wanted to write a review. Before I start, I want to note that I love Katee Robert's books. She was my most read author in 2021 with 16 books. I spent a week in July devouring her Wicked Villains series. I've talked a little about her A Touch of Taboo series before (one day I'm going to review that series). I loved the first two books of her Bloodline Vampires series. I even read Forbidden Fling, which she wrote under her pen name. It's safe to say I am a fan of Katee Robert and I have a ton of respect of her as an author.

I say all of that because this book was a struggle for me and I still don't know that I loved it. It's not bad by any means, and I liked it well enough, but it fell flat for me. I was surprised because I love Neon Gods and couldn't wait to get more of the Dark Olympus world. Ultimately, I decided on the rating I gave it because I enjoy Katee's books and I think this may have been more of a "me" issue rather than a story issue. I want to reread it in a few months to see if I feel differently. This just might not have been the book for me in the moment. I plan on continuing the series because I do enjoy it and I am clearly a Katee fan.

As someone who prefers the bad news first, let's start with the critiques so we can end on a high note with the things I liked. One of the things I struggled the most with is the timeline. This played out over a short span of time, which made it hard for me to be invested at times because there wasn't enough build up. Also, for a story that had a short timeline, it also weirdly didn't have a lot happening at the same time. You would think that it would've been jam packed with things happening, but there wasn't truly any action or threat until about 75% of the way.

I've read books where the couple is together for a weekend and they're in love, which is unrealistic, yet they're some of my favorite stories. With those stories, the relationship dynamic is strong between the characters. While I know how Eros and Psyche felt about each other separately, something was off when they were together. Their chemistry was lacking for a lot of the story, so it was hard to be invested. With Hades and Persephone, I could feel the tension and desire oozing from them all the time. I wish this story would have had some of that to help me really believe in them as a couple.

Let's talk about the spice level. I've said it before that books don't have to be spice heavy or even have spice for them to be great. However, if the story is going to be about the god of love and sexual desire, Cupid himself, then it needs to bring the spice. In my opinion, Katee is top tier when it comes to spicy scenes. Her A Touch of Taboo series, Wicked Villains, Twisted Hearts series, etc., are proof that she brings her A game when it comes to spice. This book really lacked on the spice level, which surprised me. It was definitely more fluff and some light spice, which does not scream "god of love and sexual desire". I will say I did enjoy how much Eros loved to please Psyche (the timer scene) and how much he desired her.

Okay I want to end on a high note and talk about what I liked. I enjoyed getting the world building information. For me, it didn't feel repetitive and I liked that we were given more information about the world. I loved getting to see Persephone and Hades again, albeit they were not in much of the story. I personally am a sucker for any spice scenes with mirrors, so shout out to Katee for blessing us with that scene.

The thing I enjoyed the most was the fat representation with Psyche. I'm a plus sized/fat woman and I am always looking for books that highlight fat women finding love. And not just any love, but love with a drop dead gorgeous man that could get any woman he wants. We live in a society that demonizes fat bodies and has created this narrative that fat people aren't beautiful, hot, desirable, etc. Eros is proof that the narrative society has created is false. He is obsessed with Psyche and finds her so desirable, which made me love him. I enjoyed that he never felt like he should be ashamed of finding her beautiful and wanting her. I need him to teach real life men that it's more than okay to desire fat women and to be proud to be with fat women.

I found the twist to be so good and I want their story, but I know Katee said they won't be in the first seven books. I will be impatiently waiting because I just know it's going to be so so so good. I do look forward to Wicked Beauty (I already preordered the book) and am excited to get our first M/M/F couple.

Description:
*The description comes directly from the Katee Robert's website*

He was the most beautiful man alive.
And if I wasn't careful, he was going to be my death.

*A scorchingly hot modern retelling of Psyche and Eros that's as sinful as it is sweet*

In the ultra-modern city of Olympus, there's always a price to pay. Psyche knew she'd have to face Aphrodite's ire eventually, but she never expected her literal heart to be at stake...or for Aphrodite's gorgeous son to be the one ordered to strike the killing blow.

Eros has no problem shedding blood. But when it comes time to take out his latest target, he can't do it. Confused by his reaction to Psyche, he does the only thing he can think of to keep her safe: he marries her. Psyche vows to make Eros's life a living hell until they find a way out of this mess. But as lines blur and loyalties shift, she realizes he might take her heart after all...and she's not sure she can survive the loss.
