This book blew me away when I was reading it and I absolutely devoured it. I was completely obsessed with it. This book is the reason I started my bookstagram account and it was my first book edit that I posted.
I don't know if I can properly put into words how much this book had me enthralled, but I'm going to try. I saw someone talk about it on TikTok as one of the most beautiful books they read. That pulled me in and I decided I needed to read it. I read the blurb, but really didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised that the story kept me on my toes and that I wasn't really able to predict what was going to happen.
Brittainy did a beautiful job of telling a story that was heartbreaking, yet beautiful at the same time. This book is riddled with different levels of tragedy (that's not a secret from the description) and you can feel the pain throughout the story. It's gripping and intriguing, which makes it hard to put the book down. I rarely get triggered by books, but there were definitely times my heart broke for Maggie May, the heroine, her family, friends, and Brooks, the love interest (and love of my life). I felt deeply connected to the story the entire time and it holds a special place in my heart.
Let's talk about Brooks. He is easily in my top 10 of book boyfriends/husbands. He is the definition of perfection and I truly could not stop thinking about him after this book. The way he cared for Maggie as a friend (and eventually as a love) was a highlight for me. I can't fully explain it, but I think the quote I used gives a perfect glimpse into who he is as a character. He cares and loves Maggie for who she is, "flaws" and all, regardless of how others view/treat her. He doesn't see Maggie as something that needs to be fixed, but rather someone to love and support. Even through his own tragedy he still looks out for her. Truly the best book boyfriend ever.
Maggie, Maggie, Maggie. I love her so much. She experienced a true trauma that then spiraled into other traumas in her life. I so badly wanted to write myself into the story as her defender against different people in her life *cough* her mom *cough*. However, I will say that I ended up understanding her mom better and she grew on me. Although Maggie experienced different tragedies and traumas, there was a light to her that had me connected to her. Maggie wanted to heal, she just needed time, which I think is something real that people go through. Something I loved about Maggie is how she reciprocated support and love to Brooks, not only through her struggles, but when he struggled too. I don't think they could have been more perfect for each other.
I love this book and think about it often. It made me feel hopeful, pain, sadness, happiness, and love. It was the ultimate emotional punch in the best way possible. The love between Brooks and Maggie had me so giddy and I truly could not get enough of how cute they were together. The spice isn't that evident in this book, which is actually one of the things I loved about it. I think heavy spice (which I do love) wouldn't have made sense in this book. I still felt the tension without there being open door scenes, which in my opinion, is just as good as spice.
Our lives are a collection of moments. Some utterly painful and full of yesterday's hurts. Some beautifully hopeful and full of tomorrow's promises.
I’ve had many moments in my lifetime, moments that changed me, challenged me. Moments that scared me and engulfed me. However, the biggest ones—the most heartbreaking and breathtaking ones—all included him.
I was ten years old when I lost my voice. A piece of me was stolen away, and the only person who could truly hear my silence was Brooks Griffin. He was the light during my dark days, the promise of tomorrow, until tragedy found him. Tragedy that eventually drowned him in a sea of memories.
This is the story of a boy and girl who loved each other, but didn’t love themselves. A story of life and death. Of love and broken promises.
Of moments.
