Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Spice: None (There is only kissing so I consider there to be no spice)
Tropes: Double reverse harem, major slow burn, PNR
Series: The Babylon Project #1

This series intrigued me when I saw that it was a double reverse harem. I've never read a reverse harem with two different women and harems. The plot sounded intriguing and I had to see how it played out.

The premise of two different harems forming, while working towards the same goal, intrigued me a lot. I was even more invested once we started to meet the men, particularly Kai's harem. I LOVE the diversity with Kai and her harem. Kai's mom was Native Hawaiian and her father was Native Peruvian. Jonah, one of her men, is Native American. Tanaka is her handler and one of her other men. His mother is Japanese and his father is Brazilian. I like Kai so much and found her to be a layered character.

I think the idea behind this book is a good one and a lot of the writing was done well, but there are some things that didn't work for me. One of the biggest things was the length. I don't mind a long book if the story is moving along and the length makes sense. This book is bogged down by a lot of unnecessary or repetitive information that dragged out the reading time for me. I know there's a lot going on with two harems, but it often felt like an unnecessary information dump.

Additionally, the slow burn is just too slow for me. I like the idea of it, and I agree it wouldn't work if this book was a fast burn, but I feel like it needed more than a few kissing scenes. I wanted to feel that pull between the characters.

Unfortunately for me, I don't feel a major urge to read the next book. I do want to see how the romantic relationships start to form and see if I'm right about someone being the "big bad", but it's not enough to make me desperate to read book 2. Again, I think the idea is a good one and it's there, it just needed to be worked out more.

I'm going to DNF the series for right now, but I will probably read book 2 at some point. Book 2 is almost 900 pages, so I will probably read a few chapters a day rather than read it all at once. I'm hoping book 2 will pull me in more.

Note: I RARELY DNF because it makes me feel bad. However, I want to respect the authors and pushing myself to continue to read a series I'm not connected with isn't fair to them. They put in a lot of work and I want to be in the right headspace when I review.

The darkest deeds often happen in plain sight; the harshest truths sound like lies...

Battered by the whirlwind of other people’s emotions, Kailani Reed hides away from everyone except her close friend – and forbidden crush – Hideo Tanaka, her handler at the Seattle Police Department. Hired for her unique abilities, she just wants to keep her head down and do her job. So when a high-profile case draws the attention of the Feds, Kailani wants out. But the agents running the show have other plans.

Maela Driscoll, a quirky American postgrad in London, spends her days buried in books. To make ends meet, she takes part in a psychoactive drug trial – with unforeseen and dramatic side-effects. After witnessing a brutal murder, she is forcibly recruited by MI5 agent Emlyn Ryder, who has no intention of letting her new and unusual gift slip through his fingers.

When the body count starts to mount on both sides of the Atlantic, MI5 and the Feds realize the cases are linked, through a shadowy organization known as Kronos. But what does Kronos want? And can Maela and Kailani figure it out before it’s too late?

Slow build, slow burn, Rise of Kronos is the first book in The Babylon Project, a thrilling double reverse-harem series.
